Last year, Jay Som – a.k.a. 22 year-old, Bay Area-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Melina Duterte – released her early collection of songs entitled Turn Into, signed with Polyvinyl Records, toured with the likes of Mitski, Japanese Breakfast, Peter Bjorn & John, and more, and put out a 7-inch single on Fat Possum Records. After a whirlwind year, Jay Som has now announced her proper debut album. Everybody Works will be released through Polyvinyl (North America)/Double Denim (EU/UK/Japan) on March 10. Jay Som has also shared the first track from the forthcoming release, “The Bus Song.”

Jay Som will take Everybody Works out on the road this spring, with stops at SXSW, Mission Creek Music Festival, and a co-headlining tour with The Courtney’s. Tickets are on sale now – see below to find a show near you. Everybody Works – which Duterte wrote, recorded, played and produced entirely by herself, save a few backing vocals – was made in the span of three, caffeinated weeks in her bedroom studio throughout October. Duterte even ditched most her demos, writing half the LP on the spot.

While Duterte’s early work found her facing life’s lows, Everybody Works is about turning that angst into fuel for forging ahead. While there’s no obvious politics here, Duterte says witnessing the challenges facing women, people of colour, and the queer community today lit a fire.
