“My Gruesome Loving Friend” is an anthem of living fearlessly, having been written in tribute to the real-life gruesome loving friend of Isabel. “She has two children and is very conscious and free,” says Isabel. “The way she lives excites me and other people around her, but I also see how the ethos of diving into life can be very dangerous: you are at the same time very powerful and very vulnerable. It’s so brave. So I watch her and learn.”
The Witch is a collection of songs that celebrate as well as challenge undercurrents of the present day: collectivism, frustration, euphoria, politics, aggression and love. Produced by Dan Carey, bewitching lead singer and visual artist Isabel’s lyrics are emotionally and politically invested throughout; they deftly paint tales of social coercion, female emancipation and the striving for release. Few new acts combine art, sound and visuals quite like this, though for Pumarosa everything goes hand-in-hand.
