Papa have shared their new single “Hold On”. The track was officially released on October 23rd. Papa have confirmed a run of West Coast tour dates kicking off November 27 at the Echoplex in Los Angeles. The full tour is listed below.
Papa is lead singing drummer, Darren Weiss and and bassist/songwriting partner Danny Presant. They have been playing together since the age of 11 and “Hold On” is the band’s first new music since their album Tender Madness was released in 2013 . The new effort is more fresh and hungry sounding than anything we’ve heard from them before and that change can be attributed to a sense of frustration they feel with the state of music in 2015 and where they saw themselves. Rather than fold their cards, or let their discontent guide their sound into gloomier territory, they used it as fuel for a new perspective, and a funkier, dirtier sound.
“If in the past, we tried to find a place for ourselves within the musical landscape presented to us, we now see it as our absolute mission to make sure that we don’t fit, and we’re very proud of that,” says Weiss. Presant adds “The sound out there is pretty bleak to us. We miss rhythm, we miss the sound of hunger, we miss honest dissatisfaction.”
“Everyday there’s a shit storm of noise out there. On your radio, on your tv, even in your mind. It’s so easy to get used to these things, that if you don’t have a good hold on yourself, you may not even realize that you’re listening to records that sound nothing like the way you feel, and eventually even your daydreams look like somebody else’s fantasy. It’s what inspired Jagger to sing ‘Satisfaction,’it’s what inspired Strummer to sing ‘I’m So Bored With The USA,’ and it’s what inspires me to sing ‘Hold On’ ” says Weiss.
