“From A Soon-To-Be Ghost Town” by Fruit Bats

The track is from their forthcoming album Absolute Loser, which is out May 13th via Easy Sound Recording Co. The album retains the same structural pop elements that makes Fruit Bats’ sound unique and familiar to. Its simple sounding melodies belie such thick musical textures, as some tracks incorporate up to ten guitar tracks layered on top of each other. Fruit Bats is Chicago’s Eric D. Johnson who has also played with The Shins, Vetiver, and Califone and has scored films such as Our Idiot Brothers and Smashed. Fruit Bats begin touring on May 12th in Brooklyn, NY.

Johnson previously shed the Fruit Bats name as a cleanse of sorts. Grief-stricken after the loss of his wife’s pregnancy he felt the need to to start afresh. He abandoned the Fruit Bats band name that carried him for 16 years and five successful studio albums. He ditched the moniker that connected him to stints playing with The Shins and Vetiver and Califone. Instead, Johnson continued pursuing other musical passions. He focused more on scoring films (having already contributed to works like Smashed and Our Idiot Brother). He produced Breathe Owl Breathe’s 2013 album Passage of Pegasus and grew his Huichica Music Festival in Sonoma, California.
