“Quicksand” by Meadowlark

Meadowlark, recently released their video for the single, “Quicksand”. The emotive song was written by UK duo (Kate McGill; vocals and keys and Dan Broadley; guitars) after they were deeply moved by a story on Humans of New York (HONY) about a family working in a brick kiln in Pakistan. Broadley then directed the video for ‘Quicksand’ himself, explaining:

“Quicksand was a difficult one to conceptualise, at first we went to other directors for ideas because my mind couldn’t escape the fact that this song is a very literal account from a person in Pakistan. We had dozens of incredible ideas from really talented directors but nothing quite translated the feelings embedded within the song. It was then I realised that Quicksand needed to be more of a mood film, it needed to translate the emotions within the lyrics into surreal and metaphorical visuals.

“For me, choosing a visual aesthetic to help create a more surreal world in an otherwise seemingly normal one was crucial, in this case I chose super slow motion. This medium allows the audience to see every emotion from the character in such detail, the lingering pain, the forever falling, these are all emotions that we got from reading the accounts of the victims. Even the feathers stand for something but l’ll leave your minds to decode the rest of the video.”

Released as a standalone single, ‘Quicksand’ follows Meadowlark’s recent EP, Paraffin which came out earlier this year on Believe Recordings (James Vincent McMorrow, Aquilo). Fresh from playing numerous festivals including Dot to Dot and Bushstock, as well as a sold out show supporting Mt Wolf at Hackney’s Oslo, Meadowlark will embark on a UK tour throughout September and October.
