“Oh Baby” by Micachu & The Shapes

This past September London trio Micachu & the Shapes released their third album Good Sad Happy Bad on Rough Trade. Around its release, New York filmmaker and MATS fan, Andrew Adair, contacted the trio to show them a video he made for the album’s lead single “Oh Baby.” Today, they are sharing Adair’s video.

Explaining his love for MATS’ music, while admitting that it’s “surely futile” to describe their aesthetic: “It’s the sound of a children’s toy disrobed, dismantled, and reassembled in Picasso-like fashion, so that its anatomically incorrect body, its motherboard, its anarchic wiring, and at times it’s surprise beating hear are allowed to shine.” In the song “Oh Baby,” Adair explains, “I heard a band of ghouls, the disciples of a creature of the night.” With that in mind, he went to Chicago to film with performance artist and drag legend Jojo Baby, whose transformations throughout the video echo the languid and ramshackle progression of the song itself.

Micachu & the Shapes have a string of North American tour dates, which include two special performances in LA by front woman Mica Levi. Tour kicks off next week.

Los Angeles: On Monday, November 9th Micachu & The Shapes live at the Echo, on Saturday, November 14 Mica Levi is a guest composer for The Echo Society at the MAMA Gallery in DTLA, and on Monday, November 16 Levi, MAXIXE and Raisa K will be showing off their chops in the DJ booth at Los Globos, presented by The Echo Society.
