Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks “Little Fang”

Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks premiere "Little Fang" music video, 'Enter the Slasher House' Out 4/8 via Domino. North American Tour announced for This Spring.

Domino has shared the new video for “Little Fang,” the first video from ‘Enter The Slasher House’ from Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks out April 8, 2014 (April 7 in the rest of the world).

Directed by long time Avey Tare / Animal Collective collaborator Abby Portner, the video tells the misadventure of Little Fang’s journey to the cerebral carnival. The Little Fang puppet (part cat, part werewolf) was created by the renowned Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and was wrangled by Michael Wick (Nightmare Before Christmas) and puppet mastered by Tim Lagasse (Crash and Bernstein & Sesame Street). Abby shot the video on location at Dorton’s LA Carnival in Riverside, CA and at McCadden Studio Space in Hollywood, CA.

“I think my goal for this video was to keep everything mostly in camera and handmade. I ended up using visual effects throughout the video, but I really wanted to showcase the craft of the things that were made like the puppet and physical set pieces,” explains Abby. She goes on, “I also wanted to reference horror movies, like the car scene in Psycho and the lake in Malibu that the little girl climbs out of in the original Frankenstein. Dave [Portner] and I were inspired by Jim Henson, who had a funny dark side, so we tried to make a video that also had light hearted dark side”.

Slasher Flicks by name alone is not what it appears to be. Scrambled horror film soundtracks? Not even remotely. A bunch of East Coasters making their quintessential LA album? No, more like escape from LA, say guitar-wielding Avey Tare (of Animal Collective), keyboard player and singer Angel Deradoorian (of Dirty Projectors, Deradoorian), and drummer Jeremy Hyman (of Ponytail, Dan Deacon). If LA is an environment to get lost in, as they claim, this group sewing roots in SoCal have become lost in the best way: relocating and reinventing sounds they’re already skilled in making, sounds that as Avey Tare says, are not only regionally unrestricted but that “come from a place that’s not human.”

The band will head out on a North American tour following the album’s release. Dustin Wong will support all non-festival dates.
