Weaves, She-Devils at Horseshoe Tavern

On Friday August 27, Toronto art-rockers Weaves celebrated the recent debut of their self-titled LP, bringing along friends Poster Boy and She-Devils. The Horseshoe Tavern’s checkerboard floors were full of eager fans, friends, and family of the band, united in their love and passion for the dynamic foursome.

Arriving just in time for Montreal duo She-Devils to take the stage, they provided the perfect kickoff. Frontwoman Audrey Ann Boucher’s haunting beauty radiated in every aspect of her stage presence. Whether she was demurely posed behind her microphone or pacing around the small stage, her quiet energy was impossible to ignore.

Weaves took to the stage in a flurry, kicking off with Birds & Bees off the new album. Their energy only heightened as the set carried itself out in the style of a true performance. The frenetic, neurotic pace and tone of Weaves’ sound is only amplified in the dynamics of a live setting. The guitar is shred more wildly than any recording could ever do justice, the bass is held down and undeniably groovy, the drums are frantic and forceful – and all the while, Jasmyn commands the performance as if she is the captain of the ship, the leader of the pack. When she beckons, the band calls. Yet there is no sense of hierarchy between the four. It’s evident how well they all fit together and clear that their distinct sound is one that has been moulded and maintained by each member.

Weaves are a team, a family, a group of four friends who just so happen to make beautiful music together, and their live show is a testament to that. Jasmyn’s movements are jerky yet elegant, her voice incomparably raw and enticing. If Weaves are a storm, she is the eye of it. Weaves’ dynamic and unbridled artistry will only continue to reach new heights as more and more music lovers fall under their spell.
