The Octopus Project announce ‘Memory Mirror’

The Octopus Project announce 'Memory Mirror' LP, on April 7, 2017 via Robot High School. The full-length was produced by Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala).

The Octopus Project — comprised of Toto Miranda, Yvonne Lambert, Josh Lambert, and now featuring multi-instrumentalist Lauren Gurgiolo — will release their new album Memory Mirror on April 7, 2017 via Robot High School. Recorded at Filmon Baby, Good Danny’s & Tarbox Road Studios, with mixing by Danny Reisch (Shearwater, White Denim), Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, Flaming Lips) & The Octopus Project, Memory Mirror was mastered by Greg Calbi (Talking Heads, David Bowie) at Sterling Sound. The band recently premiered the first single off the album, “Wrong Gong,”. The Octopus Project kick off an initial round of headlining tour dates on the West Coast in late February, including a Los Angeles show at Bootleg Theatre on Feb. 24th, before playing SXSW.

Comprised of 13 original songs, Memory Mirror represents a more focused approach to instrumentation and arrangement, in contrast to the heavily layered style explored on some their earlier albums. Though the songs range from guitar-driven rock, to blissed-out ambience, each has a sense of space allowing the band to pursue heavier sounds and wider vistas than ever before. Writing and recording the album were aspects of the same process, with inspiration coming from sounds, accidental textures and rhythms that would then be shaped into songs. “Small Hundred,” for example, was born out of a recording of a champagne cork popping at the end of a European tour. That sound — distorted, pitched, and played as a rhythmic sample — became the arpeggiated rhythm that drives the song’s wordless chorus. The stuttering keyboard pads on “Pedro Yang” came from a previous, failed synth composition – when it was arbitrarily chopped up and rearranged, the new rhythms that emerged suggested a slow-motion float that the song came to embody.
