Sam Evian – the New York City-based artist recently signed to Saddle Creek – has released a video for his track “I Need A Man”. The track, spurred into creative fruition following the passing of North Carolina’s discriminatory HB2 gender-based bathroom law. What at first seems like a personal longing is revealed to be a far more broader call for progress.
Says Sam of the video – in which the song’s lyrics serve as subtitles:
“Brian shot this lyric video with his iPhone. The original concept was to wear layers of masks and reveal them one after the other like a matryoshka doll, but somehow that turned into a guided panda tour of NYC. It was surprising to learn that people really adore a guy in a panda mask. We started on the Staten Island ferry and worked our way through the dark underbelly of Wall Street. We noticed a hoard of tourists taking pictures with the Wall Street bull. many of them were crowded at the rear of the bull, kneeling to take selfies with its genitals. I went in for a gross selfie, and they all fell silent and nervous. I slapped the bull’s ass and Brian and I both began to feel grossed out so we hopped in a cab and escaped. Somehow, we ended up at the Natural History museum, my favorite place in NYC.”
Premium, Sam’s debut album, is out September 30th. He’s on tour throughout October with Whitney and Teenage Fanclub.
