Trevor Powers started making music under the moniker Youth Lagoon in 2010. At that time, he was studying English at the local university in Boise and began writing songs as a way to embody the world around him. Those songs are what makes up his debut album, The Year of Hibernation. “Youth Lagoon isn’t me, but a part of me.” says Powers. “I’ve been playing music since I was younger but always tried to define myself by what music I played. I tried to find a sense of meaning in it. But it wasn’t until I realized I was more than just music, that I was able to create music that means something to me. And that is Youth Lagoon. I don’t think I could ever write a completely happy album. It’s not that I’m not a happy person,” claims Powers, “but I just have too many things in my mind that haunt me.”
