Sinkane is an alias of Ahmed Gallab, a solo recording artist from Columbus, Ohio, who sings and plays numerous instruments (drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, et al.). His percussion-heavy style of music draws from a wide range of influences, most noticeably free jazz (e.g., Pharoah Sanders) and shoegaze (e.g., My Bloody Valentine). Born in Sudan, Gallab and his family fled to the United States when he was six years old. He made his debut in May 2008 on Emergency Umbrella Records with the EP Color Voice; the same year, he toured as the drummer of Caribou and Of Montreal. A self-titled album was released in May 2009. He later signed to DFA — an ideal home for his trippy hybrid sound — and released a second album, Mars, in November 2012.

Review Of Sinkane’s “Mars”

Sinkane’s Ahmed Gallab discusses his early Sudanese upbringing as one of many influences on his music, and it’s certainly detectable all over “Mars.” The track “Warm Spell” distinguishes itself with an interesting, sinuous guitar sound that evokes what Westerners tend to think of as an “African” guitar sound—of course, the field of African guitar music is so rich and spread over so many countries that it’s difficult to just slap on that adjective without feeling at least a bit racist. Indeed, Gallab also suggests that West African music is present as an influence, a good reminder that pinning down the African sound of some of these tracks to his Sudanese origins is a mistake.
